Orleanna's paragraph
"To resist occupation, whether you're a nation or merely a woman, you must understand the language of your enemy. Conquest and liberation and democracy and divorce are words that mean squat, basically, when you have hungry children and clothes to get out on the line and it looks like rain."
In this paragraph, Orleanna is explaining her emotions, that how she now feels desperate and became ignorant of things that were once considered important. Those things can be educating and westernizing people in Congo with Christianity. Due to Nathan's ignorance toward his family, Orleanna believes now it is her job to save her family. Thus, she emphasizes that nothing really matters when you get to face your family starving and suffering.
From this chapter, the story would progress with Orleanna's position and responsibility as the mother and her attempt to escape Congo. In other way, her determined action can be compared to woman in 21st century. In this 21st century, women are not what they used to be in 18th or 19th century. They have been gradually progressing. And they became more independent, powerful, and respected. Therefore every women in 21st century are responsible for their independence, dream, and future.
