Captivity can be compared to Nathan's desire to keep his family and accomplish his (selfish) goals in Congo. His ultimate goal is to educate people in Congo with Christianity. The freedom can be the will of Nathan's family to leave Congo. The power of captivity is stronger than that of freedom throughout the story. To compare these themes to politics, captivity can be applied to the United States and Europe (especially Belgium) restraining and controlling Congo. Then, the freedom would apply to Congo's desire to get freedom.
Love can be described as familial love between Nathan's family members. Leah as the daughter of Nathan, she used to be very religious like her father. However, she changed her mind after she saw her sisters and her mother suffering from hunger and hard work due to Nathan's ignorance. She started to care her family members by her own. Betrayal can be compared to Nathan, Nathan ignoring family's love. Second theme comparison can be Leah ignoring her father's religious belief after she got to learn what is the right thing to do. Third one can be Adah comparing to herself or to the world. In another way, love can be the patriotism of people in Congo and betrayal can be the betrayal of the United States, when they broke the promise with Congo (promise to protect people of Congo and the nation Congo) by murdering Congo's president Patrice Lulumba.
